DILL Anethum graveolens A   Tall, aromatic, feathery annual. Leaves and flowers delicious with fish, potato and cucumber dishes, particularly with yoghurt and soured cream dressings. The seeds are used medicinally and as a digestive tisane.

DYER'S CHAMOMILE Anthemis tinctoria P   Frizzy aromatic foliage and all-yellow daisy flowers, useful for cutting and as a good border plant. Yields a fast yellow dye.

DYER'S GREENWEED Genista tinctoria   Delightful small broom with yellow pea flowers, which give a good yellow dye.

ELECAMPANE Inula helenium P   Majestic habit with huge yellow daisy flowers. Cottage garden herb with medicinal properties. The scented roots were formerly candied.

EVENING PRIMROSE Oenothera biennis Bi   Tall spikes of yellow flowers with a sweet primrose scent. A source of an essential fatty acid used to treat PMT and other disorders.

FENNEL, BRONZE and GREENFoeniculum vulgare P   Useful culinary herb for fish dishes and seed tea. A decorative border plant which also dries well for floral arrangements.

FEVERFEW Tanacetum parthenium A or P   Single or double daisy flowers. Of proven therapeutic value in treating migraine, has undergone clinical trials. A good cut flower.

GARLIC, CULINARY Allium sativum  A   Delicious and health-promoting herb. Available in early spring.

-----, TREE (ROCAMBOLE) Allium sativumvar. ophioscordon P   A "fun" garlic which produces garlic-flavoured bulbils at the top of a slender and erstwhile serpentine scape!

HOREHOUND, WHITE Marrubium vulgare P   Woolly plant with overall grey appearance. Old cough remedy.

HYSSOP Hyssopus officinalis P   Small shrub with pink, blue or white flowered forms available. Pleasantly scented foliage.

-----, ROCK H. aristatusP   Neat habit. Striking blue flowers, lavishly produced, attract butterflies. Good dwarf hedge.

LADY'S MANTLE Alchemilla mollis P   Has large pleated leaves that hold a dewdrop like a diamond. Frothy lime-yellow flowers. Several native species also available.

LAVENDER, ENGLISH Lavandula angustifolia P   The lavender of Mediterranean mountains and English gardens. Superior scent.

-----, FRENCH L. stoechas P   Remarkable purple flowers, needs good drainage. Spanish lavender also available.

LEMON VERBENA Aloysia triphyllaP   Deciduous tender shrub with fizzy lemon scent and delicate pink flower spikes. The leaves, fresh or dried, make a pleasant tisane. A good conservatory or summer patio plant.

LOVAGE Levisticum officinale   Very tall, celery-like plant with attractive aromatic foliage. Excellent savoury flavour for soups and casseroles. Leaves make appetising tea and refreshing bath.
