VALERIAN Valeriana officinalis   A handsome plant with pink flowers for moist places. An important sedative herb.

VERVAIN Verbena officinalisP   Delicate spikes of palest mauve flowers. Wards off evil, it is said (including the plague).

WALL GERMANDER Teucrium chamaedrys P   Small shrub with glossy dark green leaves and purple flowers.

WELD Reseda luteolaBi   Tall plant with cream flowerspikes. Yields one of the most permanent vegetable dyes, in shades of green to orange.

WOAD Isatis tinctoria Bi   Greyish green leaves and sprays of cheerful yellow flowers followed by black bead-like seeds. An important dye-plant, yielding blues and with weld or, of course, with dyer's greenweed, greens.

WOODRUFF Galium odorataum   Pretty ground-cover plant with gleaming leaves arranged in neat whorls and white flowers. When dried, the scent of new-mown hay is released.

WORMWOOD Artemisia absinthium P   Silvery, aromatic foliage. One of the bitter herbs, used to flavour vermouth.

YARROW Achillea millefoliumP   Feathery foliage and flat heads of white to pinkish flowers. Good for the wild garden. Makes an astringent lotion. Native Irish stock available.
