This list is complementary to the main herb list and consists of plants which may have herbal properties or affinities or  have scent or other aesthetic characteristics.

Achillea taygetea P   Lovely pale yellow heads, feathery leaves.

Allium triquetrum P   Triquetrus garlic or three-cornered leek! Nodding heads of white flowers. Good ground-cover.

Aloe vera P   Interesting succulent for the windowsill or conservatory. Keep a plant handy and apply the fresh juice to minor burns, sunburn or skin problems.

Antennaria dioica P   Life everlasting. A neat, close-carpeting rockery plant that is an old cough remedy.

Anthemis punctatasubsp cupaniana   Most useful blue/grey -leaved carpeter with good-sized daisy flowers.

Aquilegia vulgaris P   Old-fashioned columbine. Mixed seedlings and some other species usually in stock.

Artemisia 'Lambrook Silver'   P   Very silvery choice cultivar.

----- ludoviciana'Silver Queen'  P   Species and cultivars make effective silver ground cover.

----- fridiga P   Makes carpeting mats of silky silver foliage.

Borago pygmaea P   Pretty perennial borage with nodding blue flowers.

Catananche caerulea P   Cupid's dart.  Rosettes of neat greyish leaves and lovely blue flowers followed by papery seed heads.

Cedronella canariensis P   False balm of Gilead. Somewhat tender, powerfully aromatic; good conservatory subject.

Centranthus ruber   Red valerian. Of seaside cliffs and walls.
C. ruber'Alba'    White form.  A desirable plant for the herbaceous border.

Convallaria majalis P   Lily-of-the-valley. Heavenly scent, easy to grow.

Diplarrhena morea P   Australian member of the Iris family with clumps of stiff linear leaves and delicately beautiful white flowers.

Echinops ritrio P   Globe thistle. Handsome native species with silvery prickly leaves and steel-blue spherical heads.

Erinus alpinus P   Both species and white form available. The purple one clothes the old gaol wall at Downpatrick, County Down.

Erysimum asperum'Bowles Mauve'   P   Grey-blue foliage and spikes of magenta-purple flowers that go on and on.

Euphorbia epithymoides   A totally well-behaved spurge that gives such a welcome burst of vibrant green-yellow in spring.

----- robbiae Mrs Robb's bonnet   P   A spreader, but nevertheless attractive with its greenish flowers and good dark foliage. Give it room!

Geranium macrorrhizum 'Album'   Aromatic ground cover. White flowers and red calyces give an impression of pale pink.

----- phaeum P   Dusky cranesbill. A superb mound of foliage, studded with subtle maroon flowers. Modestly eyecatching!

Lobelia syphilitica   Tall perennial with long spikes of mauvish flowers.

Lonicerasp  P   Several scented honeysuckles often in stock, including native Irish stock.

Lupinus arboreus P   Tree lupin  Spectacular shrubby lupin in a range of soft colours.

Myrtus communis Myrtle    This classic evergreen and other related genera and cultivars usually in stock.

Osteospermum ecklonis P   Pink daisy flowers over a long season, good for cutting. Aromatic leaves.

Pelargonium sp.  P   Scented -leaved pelargoniums  A small selection of these is kept in stock.

Plantago major'Rosularis'  P   Rose plantain  A Tudor favourite with bizarre green leafy "flowers".

Phlomis fruticosa P   Jerusalem sage   A shrubby grey-leaved bush with mustard flowers that dry well.

---------- italica     Silvery woolly foliage, but slightly tender.

Primula'Guinevere'  P   Superb purple-flushed foliage with pleasantly contrasting pink flowers.

Prostanthera cuneataand P. rotundifolia Mint bush  Pretty little shrub with scented leaves and mauve flowers. It might survive in a warm corner. Good conservatory plant.

Pulmonaria officinalis P   Various cultivars available.

Rosasp  Several old and species roses are often available, eg Rosa gallica officinalis, R. mundi, R. alba, R. glaucain small numbers and from time to time.

Salix hastata 'Wehrhahnii'  P.   Lovely dwarf variety with gleaming red stems and silvery catkins.

----- helvetica P   Attractive dwarf shrub with leaves greyish above and silvery white beneath.

Sarcococcasp   P   Christmas box  Small evergreen with scented flowers in winter. Several species often available.

Sempervivum tectorum   Houseleek  A good trough or rock garden herb; remedy for skin complaints and traditionally gives protection against fire and lightning!

Seriphidium maritimum P   Sea wormwood   A pretty native with sweet scented foliage. A must for a coastal garden.

Symphytum'Hidcote Blue'  P   A low-growing comfrey with nice dark foliage and blue-pink flowers. Other species and cultivars often available.

Teucrium scorodonia 'Crispum marginatum'   P   A fascinatingly frilly foliage plant for the border.

Trifolium repensvar  purpurascens P   Purple-red leaves with predominantly four leaflets, sometimes three, five or more. Good ground cover, in tubs or lawns, and for luck.

Veronica gentianoides P   Quite lovely spikes of sky blue flowers and glossy foliage in spring. Associates well with peach and coral colours and glaucous foliage.

Vinca minor'Purpurea'   Pretty plum flowers.

-----'Gertrude Jekyll'   Lovely white-flowered form. Lightens a shady spot. Other forms often available.

Viola cucullata'Freckles'  Large violet with interesting blue-speckled flowers.

----- 'Irish Molly'  Striking old pansy with brown and yellow 'face' and slate-blue back to the petals.

----- laboradorica P   A little gem with dainty mauve flowers, deep purplish leaves and stoloniferous habit.

----- odorata P   Some of the purple, blue and white flowered cultivars in stock.
